Oh, the Places I Go!

While out on my yesterday morning, I was again memorized by the pure awesomeness that is my back yard. Just a mile away from my house is some of the best running I have ever encountered. I have my choice of flat trails, hilly trails, switch backs and more. And the views are just breath taking! It is no wonder that I enjoy it so much. I am able to experience, daily what is pure nature at it’s best.

Being the mom of young kids that I am, not to mention preschool teacher, often my thoughts while out running, will go towards popular children books. Case and point: while out yesterday, the words from Dr. Seuss’s book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” were going through my mind. When I came home to read it, it was truly fitting:

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

You’ll look up and down streets. Look ’em over with care.
About some you will say, “I don’t choose to go there.”
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you’re too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you’ll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you’ll head straight out of town.

It’s opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

My own spin on it…(same idea…sort of…)

With watch on my wrist,

and feet in my shoes,

Not to mention a belly full of

water and Gu’s…

I head out on my way. Sun, rain, sleet or snow.

I am the one who’ll decide where to go.

I head up and down streets. Study each crossroad with care

About some I will say, “I don’t choose to go there.”

With GPS packed (I pray it won’t fail)…
I try not to go down any poorly marked trail.

On the streets, I get tired,
and the pavement just hurts.
In that case, of course,
I just head for the dirt!

Oh, the beauty I see.
I am free to be me.

Out beyond the horizon
I trot about with care.
I can breathe. I can run,
I can go anywhere!

My Backyard

Here is a post from my family blog when we hiked up one of my (our) favorite hills, aka, “zig-zag hill”:

We also did a relay race on these trails last year, and are planning to do it again this year!
